Take Advantage of UK’s Winter Intersession
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 19, 2020) — Covid-19 has transformed the landscape of higher education, pushing online learning to the forefront of the college experience.
As the pathways from which students learn begin to shift, so has the academic calendar. In an effort to reduce travel by students, the University of Kentucky has extended its winter break. In doing so, UK is joining a growing number of American colleges and universities in providing opportunities for intensive study between fall and spring terms.
Designed to provide students with a wide range of educational opportunities to concentrate on a single area of study, enrich learning beyond the normal curriculum, accelerate academic progress and remain on schedule for graduation, the winter intersession is a great resource for students. “The break between the fall semester and spring semester is longer this year than usual. This longer time period and the limitations the pandemic creates make this break a great time for students to take a class or two,” said Vice Provost and Provost Chief of Staff Larry Holloway. “A student could take a key class to advance toward their degree, or to let them explore a new area or a popular course.”
Over 200 course sections will be available to students with a majority of the courses offered online. Courses will be concentrated from three weeks to six weeks, depending on the course, with the required content of a full semester.
For some students, to focus intently on just one or two courses at a faster pace is a positive, compared to a full load of courses during a regular semester, Holloway noted.
While COVID-19 has presented devastating setbacks for students across the globe, positive outcomes have also presented themselves.
Taking advantage of the winter intersession is a great way for students to boost their GPA, the perfect time to get a head start on the spring semester by taking a prerequisite course and a way to stay in the habit of studying and taking classes, keeping critical and analytical skills sharp.
Higher education is constantly evolving to meet the needs of students. More than ever this holds true. Creating additional time between the fall and spring term is not only keeping the campus community safe but is also another way the university is working to promote student success.
Through new modalities of learning and a new academic calendar, the university and its students are reimagining what learning at UK can be.
