Student Government Scholarships Deadline Today

LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 21, 2011) - UK students work hard for their academic success and in their organizations and involvement on campus. Why not get rewarded for all that hard work? UK Student Government Association (SGA) currently has five scholarships and awards available for outstanding students.

The first is the Academic Excellence Scholarship. This $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to the student who shows excellence not only in their school work, but also in their involvement on campus. In the application, students have the opportunity to explain how their leadership has contributed to the university and why they should be chosen for this scholarship. There is also a separate application for this scholarship available to graduate students.

The second is the Constitutional Scholarship. One undergraduate student will be awarded this $1,000 scholarship on the basis of demonstrated service to the university through campus involvement and leadership as well as academic success and financial need. This scholarship requires that the student must have a financial aid application on file at the Student Financial Aid Office.

The third is the Lyman T. Johnson Odyssey Award. This scholarship will be awarded to one student who has demonstrated a sincere commitment to working for the betterment of the campus and/or community. Lyman T. Johnson was the first African-American student to enroll at the University of Kentucky, and this $3,000 scholarship is given in his honor. Applicants are required to write an essay in which they explain why they exhibit three certain criteria: they have demonstrated a high degree of personal integrity; they have dedicated themselves to the betterment of the campus and/or community; and how they have overcome challenges and obstacles on the path to success.

The last award is the Zumwinkle Student Rights Award available to students, faculty and staff. Members of the UK community are encouraged to nominate a student or faculty/staff member who they believe has helped promote and protect student rights on campus. Individuals selected will receive an award along with $300.

All applications must be received by 2 p.m. today, Monday, March 21, to the Student Government office, 120 Student Center. Incomplete applications cannot be considered. All applications are available on the SGA website at
