UK Student Brings National Website to Campus

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 14, 2011) − In just one click college girls across the country have been able to keep up with the latest trends and news on campus via a new website to their audience. Now the students at the University of Kentucky have that same opportunity. "Her Campus," a website that is currently available to 162 colleges, recently launched at UK.

Lauren Conrad, a senior majoring in print journalism, is the editor and founder of the UK edition of Her Campus. The Her Campus national office notified the UK School of Journalism and Telecommunications that it was looking for a campus correspondent at the university. Once selected as editor of the website, Conrad was in charge of putting her own team together to help maintain the site.

"I am so thrilled to have a great team working with me on writing articles and marketing the website," Conrad said.

There are seven categories of coverage on each Her Campus site: Campus Cutie, Campus Celebrity, Blog, Upcoming Events, Poll, Photo Blog and Featured News. Published items in each one of these categories are specific to the respective campus, which allows Conrad and her team to hold a lot of the decision-making roles when it comes to UK’s site.

Conrad said she is confident that "Her Campus" can help engage students on campus.

"It's a great place for UK students to check out what is trending on campus," Conrad said. "And to find out trends across other colleges, there is a main content page that has some of the most viewed national stories for readers to see what is hot around U.S. colleges."

Content is updated weekly and while "Her Campus" has a team that maintains the website, they are open to ideas other students may have.

"Anyone is welcome to send me a story idea or story request they would like to have myself or one of the Her Campus UK writers put together," Conrad said.

While the website is college female-based, there are some areas that males may find worthwhile, as well. For instance, they may want to check "Campus Cutie" or "Campus Celebrity" to see if they are the week’s featured student.

Her Campus was originally created by three female Harvard University undergraduates. Stephanie Kaplan, Windsor Hanger and Annie Wang came up with the idea while working for another online fashion-based magazine at Harvard. In 2009, the group launched Her Campus, and it has been growing ever since.
