3 steps to take if you receive an academic alert

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 23, 2024) — The University of Kentucky is committed to the academic success of its students. From time to time, students may face challenges along their academic journey, and the university wants to make sure students are supported when they need it. One of the ways UK does this is through the academic alert system.

If a student’s instructors have concerns about their performance in class, they may submit an academic alert. This alert will tell a student what the concern is, which may be multiple missed classes or low grades on homework assignments, quizzes and tests and offer suggestions on how to make improvements. Whatever the academic situation, the main reason that a UK student receives an academic alert is because UK cares. Students should use the steps below if they receive an academic alert.

  1. Connect with your instructor. As soon as you receive an academic alert in a class, contact the course instructor. If possible, schedule a one-on-one meeting to discuss the alert. Find out why you received the alert and what changes need to be made. If you have missed class, make sure you submit any documentation explaining your absences.
  2. Talk with your advisor. Your advisors are here to help you discuss your options and to connect you to campus resources to help you be successful. Be honest with your advisor so that they can provide you with the support you need. To locate the name of your advisor, log into myUK and navigate to myUK GPS under the Student Services tab. Your advisor’s information will be shown on the right side of the page.
  3. Develop an action plan. Use campus resources, such as tutoring services and Integrated Success Coaching. Make using these resources a regular part of your study routine. For more information about these free resources, click here.
