This Week in Kentucky Football: Halloween Edition
On Thursdays throughout the 2015 season we will take a trip down memory lane and look back at past great plays, players and games associated with University of Kentucky football for that given week. Oct. 25
o 1952: Allen Felch had a career-high 117 rushing yards in Kentucky's 14-6 victory over the Cincinnati Bearcats.
o 1997: Sophomore quarterback Tim Couch led an aerial assault against Georgia, setting a then-school record with 41 completions, but it wasn't enough for the Wildcats as they lost to the Bulldogs, 23-13. Couch passed for 324 yards, his seventh-career 300-yard passing game.
o 2003: Kentucky, in a tight game with Mississippi State after three quarters, broke the game wide open with 21 fourth-quarter points, tied for the second most scored in a fourth quarter in school history, in their 42-17 victory over the Bulldogs. The Wildcats' special teams play was sparked by an 80-yard punt return for a touchdown by Derek Abney, the ninth-longest punt return in school history.
o 2014: Sophomore quarterback Patrick Towles passed for a career-high 390 yards in Kentucky's 45-31 loss to No. 1 Mississippi State.
Oct. 26
o 1968: Quarterback Dave Bair connected with Dicky Lyons, Sr. on a 92-yard touchdown pass, at the time the longest pass play in school history, as Kentucky lost to Georgia, 35-14. Lyons, Sr. ended up with a career-high 130 receiving yards in that game.
o 1974: Sonny Collins rushed for 147 yards, his 11th career 100-yard rushing game, as the Wildcats were narrowly defeated by Georgia, 24-20.
o 1996: Derick Logan was his own ground attack, carrying the ball a school-record 41 times for 140 yards, in Kentucky's 24-17 win over Georgia.
Oct. 27
o 1973: Sonny Collins rushed for 156 yards, his sixth-career 100-yard rushing game, in the Wildcats' 12-7 victory over Georgia.
o 1979: Linebacker Lester Boyd was all over the field on defense, registering a then-school record fifteen solo tackles, as the Wildcats lost to Georgia, 20-6.
o 1990: Al Baker rushed for 133 yards, his second-career 100-yard rushing game, as the Wildcats defeated Georgia, 26-24.
Oct. 28
o 1978: Rod Stewart had a 73-yard run, the third-longest run in school history that didn't result in a touchdown, in the Wildcats' 17-16 loss to Georgia. Stewart ended up with a career high 105 rushing yards.
o 1989: Kurt Johnson returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown, Kentucky's first kickoff return for a touchdown in 18 years and first 100-yard kickoff return, as the Wildcats lost to Georgia, 34-23.
o 1995: Moe Williams ran all over the Mississippi State defense for 238 yards, tied for the third most in school history, as Kentucky lost to the Bulldogs in a shootout, 42-32. This was also Kentucky's 1,000th game played.
o 2006: Dicky Lyons, Jr. had 117 receiving yards, his first career 100-yard receiving game, as the Wildcats defeated Mississippi State, 34-31.
Oct. 29
o 1892: Kentucky struggled to a scoreless tie with Transylvania, the school's first-ever game to end in a tie.
o 1966: Dicky Lyons, Sr. had a 62-yard punt return, at the time tied for the fifth-longest punt return in school history, as the Wildcats battled to a 14-14 tie with West Virginia. The offense was led by Larry Seiple's 136 receiving yards and Bob Windsor's 129 rushing yards.
o 1977: Kicker Joe Bryant successfully made a 52-yard field goal, tying a then-school record for longest made field goal, as Kentucky shutout Virginia Tech, 32-0.
o 2005: Rafael Little rushed for 114 yards, his third-career 100-yard rushing game, in the Wildcats' 13-7 victory over Mississippi State.
o 2011: Matt Roark was the favorite target of Kentucky quarterbacks Morgan Newton and Maxwell Smith, catching thirteen passes, tied for the second most in school history, in Kentucky's 28-16 loss to Mississippi State. Roark's 116 receiving yards tied his career high.
Oct. 30
o 1959: Kentucky had many mental mistakes on the field, penalized for a then-school record 148 yards, but it didn't affect the Wildcats as they defeated the Miami Hurricanes 22-3.
o 1965: Kentucky had a ground attack led by a pair of 100-yard rushers, Rodger Bird (118) and Larry Seiple (111), in the Wildcats' convincing 28-8 win over West Virginia.
o 1971: Kentucky's defense intercepted five passes, tied for the third most in school history, in the Wildcats' 33-27 victory over Virginia Tech.
o 2010: Randall Cobb had 12 receptions for a career high 171 receiving yards, tied for the fifth most in school history, in the Wildcats' 24-17 loss to Mississippi State.
Oct. 31
o 1952: Kentucky shut out the Miami Hurricanes 29-0 for the school's 300th victory.
o 1953: Kentucky traveled to Houston and upset No. 12 Rice 19-13 in Kentucky's first win over a ranked nonconference opponent on the road.
o 1987: Mark Higgs rushed for 168 yards, his seventh-career 100-yard rushing game, in the Wildcats' 14-7 victory over Virginia Tech.
o 1992: Doug Pelfrey had a busy day on the field, setting school records for most made field goals (five) and most points scored by a kicker (eighteen), in Kentucky's narrow 37-36 defeat to Mississippi State. One of Doug's made field goals was from 52 yards, at the time tied for the third-longest made field goal in school history. The offense was led by Pookie Jones' career 357 passing yards.
o 2009: Derrick Locke rushed for 103 yards, his second career 100-yard rushing game, as Kentucky lost to Mississippi State, 31-24.
