Celebrating Five Years of Lifelong Learning in Somerset
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 6, 2013) — The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Kentucky (OLLI at UK) invites adults 50 and older to an open house celebrating five years of lifelong learning in Somerset.
The event will take place at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21, in the Pulaski County Library, located at 304 South Main Street in Somerset. The celebration will include special presentations by OLLI at UK, Somerset members. Leadership Council member Susan Elmore will present on "Bettie Phillips: The Wife of a Confederate Officer, Four Years at War and Beyond," about a woman who accompanied her husband in camp the entire four years of the war.
Following the celebration, the spring list of courses will be presented, and there will be opportunities for guests to visit the exhibits and talk with instructors. Drawings will be held for door prizes and refreshments will be served.
The following courses will be offered this spring: Fundamentals of Photography; The OSS and CIA; Civil War 1863; Step Up to the Plate: Healthy Choices to Fit Your Lifestyle; Safety in Today’s World; The Cast of Characters Surrounding the JFK Assassination; and Beginning and Intermediate Acrylic Painting. The special interest group "Writing Your Family History" will be continued.
The spring catalog also includes a new series: Friday Forums, from noon to 1 p.m., offering a variety of presentations during the six-week series. The first Friday Forum will be held on March 8, with presentations by Mayor Eddie Girdler and County Judge Executive Barty Bullock.
Registration tables will open following the course presentations. Spring membership is $10. Course fees vary. However, most are $10 for the semester.
