SHEP Celebrates Artist's Accomplishment

of

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 9, 2011) — The Supported Higher Education Project (SHEP) will celebrate the publication of a book featuring illustrations by artist Silas Jones, with a book signing event tonight from 7-9 p.m. at the Barnes and Noble bookstore at Hamburg Place in Lexington. The event is free and open to the public.

Jones, a SHEP-supported student at Bluegrass Community and Technical College, did the illustrations for Lexington author Kathy Benedetto's "Dark Shala," a fantasy novel published by Blackwyrm Publishing.

SHEP, a project of the University of Kentucky's Human Development Institute, supports students with intellectual disabilities in inclusive educational settings using person-centered planning. Through partnerships with higher-education institutions like BCTC, SHEP has worked to make college courses more inclusive and accessible.

Jones, who was featured last December in an article on UKNow, was the first student to sign up for classes through the partnership at BCTC, studying art and graphic design.
