LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 24, 2017) The 2017 University of Kentucky Libraries Spring Gala will recognize this year's recipient of the UK Libraries Medallion for Intellectual Achievement, national public health leader Dr. F. Douglas Scutchfield. The gala, presented by the UK Libraries National Advisory Board, will begin 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, in the William T. Young Library on UK's campus.

Scutchfield, who served most recently as the Bosomworth Professor of Health Services Research and Policy in the College of Public Health and College of Medicine, officially retired from UK in January 2017, but remains active in teaching, research and mentorship. He was founding director of both the School of Public Health at UK and the UK Center for Health Services Research and Management. He has also held the administrative positions of chair of the Health Services Department and Preventive Medicine Department, and is a past associate dean of the UK College of Medicine. Additionally, Scutchfield was the founder of the Graduate School of Public Health at San Diego State University. A recipient of many national awards, including the American Medical Association’s Distinguished Service Award, he currently serves on the editorial board of the American Journal of Public Health.

The UK Libraries Medallion for Intellectual Achievement is one of UK's most prestigious awards. It was created in 1990 to recognize high intellectual achievement by a Kentuckian who has made a contribution of lasting value to the Commonwealth. The award also promotes education and creative thought. The recipient is determined by majority vote of the UK Libraries National Advisory Board.

The UK Libraries Spring Gala award presentations will begin at 6 p.m. A reception will follow with cocktails and heavy hors d'oeuvres. Tickets for the gala are $25; Individuals should RSVP by May 5 to Amanda Jewell at awjewe2@email.uky.edu or 859-218-1221 if they plan to attend. Payment should be sent in advance via check or brought in person to the dean's office of UK Libraries. Tickets will not be sold at the door.
