'Unlearn Fear + Hate' Comes to UK Campus

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Apr. 18, 2016) — The final in a three-part Cross-cultural Lunch and Learn Workshop series takes place at 12:30 p.m. today at 163 Holmes Hall (Art Studio) on Avenue of Champions.

“Unlearn Fear + Hate” is the title of today's workshop.  The phrase “Unlearn Fear + Hate” comes from Frank X Walker’s poem “Love Letter to the World.” Unlearn Fear + Hate is a phrase widely seen in the Lexington community now, including being the subject of a public art project conceived by Transylvania University artistic collaborators Kurt Gohde and Kremena Todorova, who will speak at the workshop.

Last week, the artists took part in a 60-foot long stencil of the phrase “Unlearn Fear + Hate” on the Rose Street walkway. The event was co-hosted by the UK College of Social Work’s Social Justice Week, and the Muslim Student Association’s Islamic Awareness Week.

Today's workshop will also offer a free lunch and a chance to have deeper discussions about current issues and matters of diversity in the U.S. and on campus. Representatives from UK diversity-based groups will attend to facilitate small group discussions and provide information about resources on campus.

The Cross-cultural Lunch and Learn Workshop series is sponsored by the Office for Institutional Diversity, and is organized by the College of Education Office of International School Partnerships, the Gatton College of Business and Economics, and the International Student and Scholar Services, as well as other student groups.
