Howard Receives Excellence in Emergency Nursing Award

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 11, 2011) − Patricia K. Howard, operations manager for Emergency and Trauma Services at University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital, recently received the Judith Kelleher Award from the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) at the ENA Annual Conference recently in Tampa, Fla.
 

The Judith C. Kelleher Award is named after ENA’s co-founder and honors a member of the association who has consistently demonstrated excellence in emergency nursing.
 

"Patti Howard clearly demonstrates all the attributes for this lifetime of achievement and contribution to the improvement of nursing practice in an emergency setting," said Colleen Swartz, chief nurse executive of UK HealthCare. "Patti has provided leadership of teams as well as individual contributions to practice, education and research.  Her achievement and recognition with the Kelleher award is well deserved and we are fortunate to have her with us at UK HealthCare."
 

Howard was the 34th president of the Emergency Nurses Association in 2005. She served on the ENA board from 2000-2006, and has served as a trustee and chairperson of the ENA Foundation which provides scholarships to nurses seeking higher education. She has served on numerous national committees and is currently the chairperson for the ENA Future of Nursing workgroup and is a member of the American Heart Association Emergency Cardiovascular Care committee.

 

Howard speaks nationally on emergency care, is a co-section editor for the triage section of the Journal of Emergency Nursing and the Advanced Emergency Nursing Journal Research to Practice column as well as co-editor of the 6th edition of Sheehy’s Emergency Nursing Principles and Practice. 

She has numerous publications on various emergency nursing topics. She is earned a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN), a master's of science in nursing (MSN), and a doctorate degree in nursing (PhD) all at UK. She holds memberships in ENA, Sigma Theta Tau, the American Nurses Association (ANA), The National Association of EMS Educators (NAEMSE), and the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN).
