Free Prostate Screening at Markey Cancer Center
LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 16, 2010) — The Markey Cancer Center is offering free prostate cancer screenings, by appointment only, from 4:30-7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28.
Prostate cancer is the second-leading killer of adult men. Typically slow-growing, prostate cancer often goes undetected for years. The goal of screening is to detect prostate cancer early, when there are more options for treatment, the risks of complications are lower, and the chance for survival is much higher. The screening, which is recommended to be performed yearly for men of screening-eligible age, consists of a brief, painless physical examination and a blood test.
These free screenings are available to men who have not had a screening in at least two years and who are over 40 (or over 35 for higher-risk individuals, including minority men and those with a family history of prostate cancer). Appointments may be made by calling (859) 257-4488 or toll-free, 1-866-340-4488.
The free screening is not intended to serve as a "second opinion" for men who have been tested recently. Men who have previously had an abnormal prostate examination are urged to make an appointment with a urologist. To make an appointment to see a UK urologist, please call 1-800-333-8874.
