UKPD, Galls Work to Raise Breast Cancer Awareness

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 15, 2010) − The University of Kentucky Police Department has been working to raise breast cancer awareness this month through its "Pink Hat" campaign.

The police have been joined in their efforts by a $5,000 donation to the Markey Cancer Foundation from local public safety equipment and apparel company Galls, a division of ARAMARK. Galls is one of the largest suppliers of uniforms and equipment to the folice, fire and military market.

All 120 employees of the UKPD have been wearing pink and black hats in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, to raise awareness about breast cancer and the importance of research for finding a cure. The hats were donated by 5.11 Tactical of Modesto, Calif., one of the world's largest manufacturers of uniforms and equipment for police, fire and military.

"The importance of cancer awareness is something that each of us must individually and collectively give an emphasis to, said UK Chief of Police Joe Monroe. "As part of the University of Kentucky Police Department's mission, we strongly believe in community service and interacting with our community."

Larry Dismukes, president of Galls, said his company was proud to contribute to the fight against breast cancer.

“As members of the Lexington community, we thought it important to show our support in a meaningful way,” Dismukes said. “Our support here is consistent with other efforts around the country by ARAMARK and its subsidiaries.” 

Representatives from the UK Police Department and Galls came to the Markey Cancer Center to present the donation, which was accepted by Dr. Randall G. Rowland, president and CEO of the Markey Cancer Foundation and Dr. Mark Evers, director of the Markey Cancer Center.
