Thanks to PPD Staff, Who Keep Our Campus Safe
Monday, March 19, 2018
Last week, while many of our students were away from our campus for spring break, our community received another blast of winter weather.
Heavy snows throughout last Sunday night and early Monday morning resulted in a two-hour delay for non-designated employees on our campus.
In making decisions on days of severe winter weather, we always are mindful of the safety of all members of our community. While our goal is always to keep campus fully operational, there are rare occasions, like last Monday, when we must alter our normal schedule or close campus and operate on our severe weather staffing plan known as Plan B.
We were able to quickly return to normal operations on Monday, thanks to the outstanding work of our Physical Plant Division (PPD) employees in Facilities Management. These staff members arrived on campus in the early morning hours to begin removing snow, cleaning sidewalks, and ensuring other pedestrian and vehicular pathways were safe.
We are immensely grateful for our PPD staff throughout the year, but especially on days like Monday when our community’s safety is affected by weather. Please join me in thanking them for their dedication and their exceptional work. I would also like to thank Vice President for Facilities Management Mary Vosevich for effectively and expeditiously overseeing the process.
While we hope that inclement winter weather is now behind us, it is still a good idea for members of the community to review and update UK Alert account and preferences.
To review and update your account, you should simply log in to myUK and click the UK Alert tab. For students, this will be in the “Student Services” tab. Employees will find the UK Alert tab under the “Employee Self-Service” tab. Details about the University’s severe weather procedures can be found here.
The most up-to-date information during emergencies can be found in the following places:
- UK home page
- UK Alerts web page
- UKNow
- UK’s official social media accounts on Facebook and Twitter
- The UK Infoline at 859-257-5684
- UK cable channel 184
- Digital cable channel 219
- Other local media outlets
We encourage students to remember that individual faculty members may also cancel classes when the University is still open and operating. Check your email and Canvas for notifications directly from instructors.
I hope that everyone had a safe and relaxing spring break. Let’s finish off the semester strong.
Have a great week.
