Are You Available to Students After Hours?

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 2, 2012) — A few weeks after students settle into their new University of Kentucky home, the Office of Residence Life offers a distinctly rewarding experience for them, faculty, staff and administrators.

The program, After Office Hours, gives university officials the opportunity to meet students in a small informal setting, right in their residence halls. The students have the rare opportunity of getting their information from the source.

The Division of Student Affairs is seeking campus leaders to volunteer for After Office Hours on Oct. 23-24, 2012. This program offers volunteers the unique experience of meeting students, and knocking on doors is not required. After Office Hours is a spin-off of House Calls and Ask an Advisor, but one element has remained the same, the commitment to promoting academic success among student residents.

According to research, students correlate their overall institutional satisfaction with the faculty, staff and student interactions they have throughout the year both inside and outside of the classroom. The Office of Residence Life is committed to offering residential students a supportive environment that embraces learning opportunities and meaningful connections outside of the classroom setting.

After Office Hours is a UK community-building initiative designed to reach out to all students and give them an opportunity to meet with key and influential members of the UK community. This outreach program will allow faculty, staff and student leaders the opportunity to spend time in an assigned residence hall, ask students about their college experience, answer questions and share helpful resources.

The Office of Residence Life asks of potential volunteers: What better way to learn about today’s students and what they need to be successful than meeting them where they live?

There are two opportunities to become involved. Participants can join the event 5-8:30 p.m. Oct. 23, Oct. 24 or both days. Volunteers are asked to RSVP by Oct. 11, 2012.

Each evening will begin with an orientation dinner, then Residence Life staff will be available to escort volunteers back to the residence halls to participate in After Office Hours. The program is expected to conclude each evening between 8-8:30 p.m.
