College of Medicine Hosts Screening of Documentary "Girl Rising"

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 22, 2013) – The University of Kentucky College of Medicine Chapter of the American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) will host a screening of the new CNN- produced documentary "Girl Rising" at the Regal Hamburg Pavilion movie theatre at 7:30 p.m., Monday, March 11.

AMWA is a national organization for women physicians, residents and medical students; it emphasizes and advocates for important physical, cultural and socioeconomic issues in the lives of all women.

“Girl Rising” tells the stories of nine girls from different countries - including Cambodia, Haiti, India and Afghanistan - and shows how access to education would change their lives. The film shows the girls fighting back against gender and cultural stigmas and stereotypes, forced labor, and natural disasters.

Tickets are $10, and must be purchased this month in advance of the showing. All ticket proceeds go to 10x10, a social advocacy non-profit that assists girls across the globe achieve an education.
