Extra Trash Collection Days Added Around Campus
LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 26, 2013) — As the end of the spring semester 2013 approaches, the great exodus of students and others affiliated with the University of Kentucky officially begins.
With the spring flowers, crops of extra trash – a broken chair, a box of throw-away kitchen gadgets, curtains that should never cover another window, old T-shirts and other miscellaneous whatever’s -- will soon start appearing on the curbs of the neighborhoods surrounding campus.
To relieve the eyesores and prevent city fines, Lexington’s Division of Waste Management has added two extra days to their trash removal schedule in the areas marked on the attached maps. In addition to regular pick-up days, these neighborhoods will have two additional collection days, Saturday, April 27, and Saturday, May 4.
Lexington's Division of Waste Management arranged the extra collections "to prevent sidewalks and streets around campus from becoming unsightly and dangerous," said Esther Moberly, recycling program specialist.
"We encourage students to continue to be good neighbors even as though move away," she added.
To take advantage of this opportunity, place waste on the curb after 4 p.m. the day before, (Friday evening, April 26) and (Friday evening, May 3). Don’t forget to take advantage of the regular collection day that week in your neighborhood.
All waste must be bagged and inside the appropriate cart. Large items can be placed on the curb besides the cart. But do not dispose of loose materials or trash in cardboard boxes left on the curb.
You could receive a substantial fine if you leave trash on the curb before 4 p.m. the day before trash collection.
If your household items – like furniture, kitchen ware, clothing and other property – are still serviceable, consider donating them to charities, like Goodwill (859-806-7951) or ReStore (859-252-2224, ext. 101).
