Flu Shot Clinics Begin Monday for Students, Faculty and Staff

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 28, 2012) — Beginning Monday, University Health Service will sponsor flu shot clinics for University of Kentucky students, faculty and staff.

Vaccinations are $10 for students and $20 for faculty and staff.

UK HealthCare employees will receive a complimentary flu vaccination. They must be wearing their UKID badge to receive the vaccination at no cost.

Influenza, more commonly known as the flu, is a serious viral respiratory infection that is spread through the droplet secretions of an infected individual. To prevent the spread of the flu, a shot is recommended for everyone. The elderly and individuals with chronic or acute illnesses are at higher risk for serious complications if they contract the flu.

The Centers for Disease Control reminds the public that flu is a serious contagious disease that can lead to hospitalization and even death. The CDC suggests the following actions to protect yourself and others from the flu:

  • Take time to get a flu vaccine. This is the first and most important step in protecting against flu viruses. The vaccine protects against the three viruses that research suggests will be most common this season. Everyone ages 6 months and older - and especially those who are at high risk - should be vaccinated.
  • Take everyday preventive actions to stop the spread of germs. This includes covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough and sneeze (throwing the tissue in the trash after using it) and washing your hands with soap and water - or an alcohol based hand rub (if soap and water aren't available); avoiding  touching  your eyes, nose and mouth (germs spread this way); avoiding close contact with sick people when possible.
  • Take flu antiviral drugs if your doctor prescribes them. If you get the flu, antiviral drugs can treat them. Antiviral drugs - which are different from antibiotics - can make illness milder and shorten the time you are sick. They may also prevent serious flu complications.

The UK College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy, UK HealthCare Nursing and Infection Prevention and Control are providing support to University Health Service for all clinics.
