Libraries to Require Link Blue Accounts for Access

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 11, 2009) − To ensure better availability of computers for education and research needs of University of Kentucky students, faculty and staff, starting in early 2010, more public computers in the William T. Young Library, the Lucille Caudill Little Fine Arts Library and Learning Center, and the Alvin E. Evans Law Library will require users to log in using UK "Link Blue" accounts

In Young Library, the majority of computers on the second floor and all computers provided by UK Libraries on the third, fourth and fifth floors will be switched to "Link Blue" authentication. This is a total of 78 computers that will require a "Link Blue" account for access.

In Little Library, all computers on the second floor and the majority on the first floor will be switched to "Link Blue." This is a total of 27 computers at this library.

Evans Library is considering the requirement of a "Link Blue" account to access computers in their facility. They are currently assessing how many computers they will have requiring "Link Blue" authentication. Like the other two library sites, not all of the computers will require an account.

These changes will provide enhanced computer access for UK affiliated users of the Young, Little and Evans Libraries, and will replicate the type of computer access already established in The Hub and in the Science Library.

Visitors will still be able to access computers designated as "open computers" in Young, Little and Evans Libraries. Young will provide 21 computers in the lobby, second floor and in The Hub for the general public. In Little Library, 10 computers will be designated for general public access. In all three locations, visitors will still be able to access library information using personal laptops or other Wi-Fi devices on the campus wireless network or they may plug into the wired network for access to UK Libraries’ information.

"These changes will enhance our primary mission of providing information for the education and research needs of UK students, faculty, and staff by improving access to computers in the Young, Little and Evans Libraries without severely hampering our commitment to the citizens of the Commonwealth and the general public," said Dean Carol Pitts Diedrichs.
