Lyman T. Johnson Gala Honors Alumni, Students

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 22, 2010) — Three University of Kentucky alumni and two current students were honored during the recent Lyman T. Johnson Alumni Gala

Awards were presented in the following categories:

Whitney Rose, exercise science major and member of the UK Gymnastics Team, won in the athletics category. Alumnus winner was Eunice Beatty ’75 HS, ’82 ’94 ED. Rachel M. Saunders of the College of Medicine won the Graduate Professional Award. La Toya Bo’nee Lee of the College of Nursing won the Undergraduate Award, and the Legacy Award went to Ollen Hinnant ’55 Law.

The Lyman T. Johnson UK Alumni African-American Constituent Group celebrated its 20th year this year. Since 1990, the group has recognized the accomplishments of African-American alumni and undergraduates at UK during its Homecoming festivities.

This year’s Homecoming celebration featured several new events, including an Old School African American Greek Step Show. UK alumni from the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. demonstrated some old school “stepping” preceded by a documentary about Black Greeks. A Jazz Café and R&B Music Lounge, a comedy show, featuring comedienne and UK alum Angel Moore Tanksley, and a class reunion memory room were also part of the festivities.

Proceeds from the Lyman T. Johnson Alumni Gala go toward scholarships for UK undergraduate students.
