Nominations Sought for the 2012 Sullivan Medallions

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 3, 2011) — Every year the University of Kentucky recognizes three people, a graduating senior woman, a graduating senior man, and a citizen (non-student) who have demonstrated an outstanding personal commitment to serving their community, reflecting “such characteristics of heart, mind, and conduct as evince a spirit of love for and helpfulness to other men and women.” This year the Sullivan Medallions will be presented at the Founders Day Celebration on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012.

Recipients have included well-known personalities, such as philanthropist E. O. Robinson, Courier-Journal publisher and philanthropist Barry Bingham, Nobel laureate William Lipscomb Jr. and Vice President of the United States Alben Barkley, as well as those whose service was almost anonymous, such as Patrick Smith, who in retirement built homes for the poor on three continents; Debbie Goonan, a social worker who repeatedly volunteered to help the needy in Ghana and Ecuador; and Anna Hays, who participated in Teach for America, reorganized UK’s Alternative Spring Break to provide greater service to those needing help, and coordinated and implemented UK SGA activities in Kentucky and internationally. These individuals gave their time and energy to improve the lives of others.

Every member of the UK community is asked to consider nominating worthy individuals for the Sullivan Medallion. For more information and nomination forms, visit the UK Sullivan Awards website at http://www.uky.edu/SullivanAward/.
