LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 5, 2017) — Are you a caregiver? Someone who takes on the responsibilities of caring for a loved one? Whether you are new to the caregiver role or have been performing it for a while, University of Kentucky Human Resources would like to make your search for caregiving resources a little easier.

UK Human Resources will host a Senior Resource Fair and half-day dementia care workshop Friday, Nov. 10. The Senior Resource Fair will take place 10 a.m.–1:30 p.m., in the Hilary J. Boone Center. The fair is open to all faculty, staff, retirees and students. Spouses, partners and community friends are also welcome and encouraged to attend.

The goal of the event is to help UK community members find resources to meet their caregiving needs — whether for an immediate need or for future reference. Forty community agencies and businesses from the Lexington area will be present. Many agencies and businesses will offer UK employee discounts for those who attend.

Registration is available here.

“HR’s Elder Care Office is hosting this event because we recognize that caregivers want to provide the best care possible for their loved one,” said Terri Weber, HR Elder Care coordinator. “For most of us, caring for an elderly parent or loved one is unfamiliar territory. It comes with new responsibilities and tasks that we are not prepared for. We want to do what’s best for our loved one, but we need to keep in mind the responsibilities and obligations we have to our self, our family and our job. Finding out what tools, help and support are available is an important caregiving step.”

This year’s event will include a half-day dementia care workshop, “Seeing It From the Other Side," featuring Kathy Tuckey. The workshop will be held from 9 a.m.–12:30 p.m., in the Hilary J. Boone Center. Tuckey will discuss the changes brought about by dementia, the four truths about dementia and the typical issues that occur from the early stages of the disease to the final care concerns.

She will share awareness and techniques to help you be an empowered positive care partner. Tuckey is a Certified Positive Approach LLC educator and speaker and has more than 30 years of experience in the area of gerontology.
