Upcoming lane and road closures: Cooper and University Drives

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 30, 2026) — Utility crews will continue working to relocate transmission and distribution lines along Cooper and University drives starting as early as Sunday, Nov. 1. This work will necessitate temporary lane closures on Cooper Drive, as well as a full road closure on University Drive.
Work relocating the overhead lines will take place 6 p.m.-6 a.m. to avoid peak travel times. Crews anticipate keeping one lane of Cooper Drive open whenever possible, with flaggers on-site to direct traffic and assist pedestrians.
The underground trench work on University Drive will take place 9 p.m.- 5 a.m. and will require a full road closure during those hours. This project is expected to take up to two weeks to complete and is weather-dependent.
As a result, expect late-night impacts and detours to campus bus routes including the Blue, White, Orange and Yellow routes. Pedestrians should not be impacted, as the sidewalk along the east side of University Drive is expected to remain available.
University Drive will be open during the day, with steel plates in place to allow for the flow of traffic.
In addition, approximately 75 parking spaces in the northwest corner of the North Red Lot will be unavailable during the project and will be used to accommodate cable reels and cable pulling equipment.
This utility work is associated with the Chandler Hospital expansion project.
