Colloquium on Substance Abuse, Trauma and Treatment

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 18, 2012) — Two nationally acclaimed experts in the field of substance use, misuse and abuse will come to the University of Kentucky campus as part of the UK College of Social Work Dean's Colloquium Series. 

The colloquium, which is free and open to the public, will take place from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, April 20, in the President's Room of the Singletary Center for the Perfoming Arts. 

Lala Straussner, founding editor of the Journal of Social Work Practice in the Addictions, will present "Substance Abuse and Trauma: Issues through the Life Cycle." Straussner has served on the National Center on Substance Abuse Treatment panel on workforce issues and was the northeast regional director for the federally funded national Project Mainstream, an interdisciplinary project to improve health professional education on substance abuse.

Stanley Einstein, editor-in-chief of the journal Substance Use and Misuse, will present "Drug Abusers, Users, Misusers, Abstainers Can’t Be Treated! People Can!" Einstein has authored more than 150 articles in professional journals. He is also the founder and executive director of the Institute for the Study of Drug Misuse. For more than 40 years, Substance Use and Misuse has provided a unique international multidisciplinary environment for the exchange of facts, theories, viewpoints and unresolved issues concerning substance use, misuse (licit and illicit drugs, alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine), "abuse" and dependency, eating disorders, and gambling.
