If Going Home is Hard, UK Counselors Can Help

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 20, 2015) — While most members of the University of Kentucky community are looking forward to the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday break, some students’ hearts are filled with dread at the thought of going home.  For some, family or friends at home present a dire threat to a student’s physical and emotional well-being.

Does going home make you feel anxious?

Do you no longer feel welcome or safe at home?

Are you worried about problems that may arise during your visit?

Are you not going home for the holidays because of these fears and anxiety?

If you can answer yes to any of these questions, an event is scheduled today to help you with these anxieties. The university’s Violence Intervention and Prevention (VIP) Center, Counseling Center and Dean of Students/Community of Concern Office sponsor “When Going Home is Hard” at 2 p.m. Nov. 20, at the VIP Center in the basement of Frazee Hall.

A similar event will be held at noon Dec. 8 at the VIP Center. Pizza provided for participants.

Experts from these three Student Affairs divisions will talk about issues that can arise and provide time for students to learn about resources and to develop specific skills to manage difficult situations.

A second “When Going Home is Hard” event is scheduled during December’s dead week.
