'Machete Kills' and 'Burma Soldier' Featured at LNFS

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 5, 2014) — The Late Night Film Series in Worsham Theater is screening “Black Snake Moan” at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5; “Machete Kills” at 10 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6; and  “Burma Soldier” at 7 p.m. and “Black Dynamite” at 10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7.  Admission is free.

In “Black Snake Moan,” Lazarus, a former blues musician who now survives by truck farming in rural Mississippi, finds a young girl, Rae, nearly beaten to death near his home. Abused by her mother and father, Lazarus nurses Rae back to health and provides her with gentle, fatherly advice as well as an education in blues music. When Rae's boyfriend, Ronnie, misunderstands the relationship between Lazarus and Rae and vows to kill him, Lazarus comes to resurrect the couple’s relationship.  (Rated R, 116 minutes).

Upon his recruitment by the United States government, in “Machete Kills,” Machete must battle his way through Mexico in search of an arms dealer who intends to launch a weapon into space. (Rated R, 107 minutes).

Burma’s brutal dictatorship is seen through the eyes of a courageous former soldier who, quite literally, swapped sides, becoming a pro-democracy activist, in “Burma Soldier.”  The former Burmese soldier lays bare an understanding of a brutal regime, and the political and psychological power of the junta over this country. (Unrated, 70 minutes).

Michael Jai White revives the blaxploitation genre with a flick that revels in its authenticity. Convoluted plot, campy performances, and exposed microphones help to make “Black Dynamite” one of the best intentionally bad movies of all time. (Rated R, 84 minutes).
