Office of Wellness Initiatives for Student Empowerment Establishes Collegiate Recovery Community

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 11, 2016) — The University of Kentucky Office of Wellness Initiatives for Student Empowerment (WISE) is excited to announce the launch of its Collegiate Recovery Community (CRC).

UK’s CRC is dedicated to empowering students recovering from addictive disorders to achieve academic, personal and professional success while maintaining recovery. The CRC provides a safe and supportive community for students in recovery, including a positive social atmosphere with like-minded peers, dedicated and qualified recovery staff and an emphasis on developing as productive members of society.

Living in recovery on a college campus can be very difficult but the CRC exists to bring recovering students together — students who are pursuing a life of sobriety while achieving their goals.

Kelsey Hinken, WISE prevention coordinator, is excited about the establishment of a CRC on UK’s campus.

“Students involved with collegiate recovery communities tend to have higher GPAs, higher graduation rates as well as lower relapse rates,” Hinken said.

Hinken is also passionate about providing recovering students with the support they need.

“I would love to get feedback from students about what they would like to see because – ultimately – that is what we want the CRC to be. Whatever recovering students feel they need, whatever resources they want to have, that’s absolutely what the CRC would like to provide for them,” Hinken said.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, April 12, the CRC team will be available on the Mining and Minerals Plaza near William T. Young Library from noon to 3 p.m. Grab some free goodies and see what CRC is all about.
