Panoramic Photographer David Hilliard Opens May Lecture Series
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 31, 2012) — Panoramic photographer David Hilliard kicks off the 2012-2013 Robert C. May Photography Endowment Lecture Series presented by the Art Museum at the University of Kentucky. Hilliard's free public lecture begins at 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, in the Worsham Theater, at the UK Student Center. A free public exhibition of Hilliard's work is currently on display in the Art Museum at UK through Nov. 11.
Hilliard's multi-panel photographs are known to literally expand the field of portraiture. He invites the viewer into the world of his subjects by suggesting subtle narratives about the nature of love, family, adolescents and sexuality. Hilliard's work is often based on his own life, as in a self-portrait of him with his father titled "Rock Bottom."
Hilliard received a bachelor's degree from the Massachusetts College of Art in 1992 and a master's degree from Yale in 1994. He worked many years as an assistant professor at Yale University, where he also directed the undergraduate photo department. Hilliard has taught at Harvard University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He is currently a professor at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston.
Hilliard's work has been exhibited throughout the United States in addition to venues in Spain, Germany and France. He has won numerous awards including the Fulbright and Guggenheim. Hilliard's photographs can be found in many important collections including the Whitney Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
The May Lecture Series explores photography's roots in the 19th century and its reinvention in the digital world. The lecture series is made possible through the Robert C. May Photography Endowment, a museum fund established in 1994 for the support of acquisitions and programs relating to photography. Other photographers coming to town as part of the series include Lalla Essaydi, Hank Willis Thomas and Martha Rosler.
