SAB to host #TrendingTopics: Vegetarians vs. Meat-Eaters

of

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 12, 2014) — The Student Activities Board Engaging Issues Committee is back at it with the third and final #TrendingTopics event of the semester at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, in 230 Student Center. The event will be in debate format, much like the others, and will address the question: Does a vegetarian or meat-eating lifestyle lead to greater all-around health benefits.

There is a lot of debate among health experts about whether a meat-eating or vegetarian diet is healthier. There are benefits and drawbacks to both sides, such as more protein for meat-eaters and less fat for vegetarians. Students can hear these positives and negatives debated between two equally qualified participants and voice their own opinions on the subject.

"This debate will be interesting because students will be able to learn the facts about what happens when they eat certain types of food,” James Collard, SAB director of engaging issues, said. “A lot of us have strong opinions about what we should and shouldn't eat, but few people actually understand what our body truly does with the food it takes in and how certain foods prevent health risks."

#TrendingTopics is a debate series that covers relevant, engaging topics and provides a safe environment for students to interact and participate. Each debate consists of two or more debaters knowledgeable on the topic at hand. Mobivity will be used to poll attendees before and after the debate via text and a tweet wall will be present.

SAB brings more than 100 entertaining, educational and enriching programs that are reflective of contemporary issues and trends to the University of Kentucky annually. These programs are designed to enhance the college experience for students, faculty, staff and the greater Lexington community.
