Testing of Outdoor Emergency Notification

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 5, 2013) — The University of Kentucky is making a nearly $5 million investment toward enhancing safety measures and technology across our campus. It’s another example of how we work each day – in units and departments across our campus – to place students and our faculty and staff first in everything that we do.

As the new emergency notification portion of the state-of-the-art security system is prepared to become operational, testing of the emergency notification towers will take place between 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 5.

Test messages will be relayed in unison to all 26 emergency notification tower locations throughout campus.  The test messages will include a series of tones, followed by a recorded message, and ending with two short tones.  The messages will be identified as tests only, and can be disregarded.

When fully operational, the emergency notification towers, which also include emergency phone access at the push of a button, will be illuminated at all times during the night and flash during times of emergency.  In the event of a campus incident or weather warning that requires immediate action by the campus community, emergency messages will be relayed through these outdoor speakers.
