UK Campus Invited to Celebrate Earth Day 2016

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 21, 2016) — University of Kentucky and Lexington have several events planned to honor Earth Day 2016.

From 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday, April 21, at The 90, the UK Student Sustainability Internship Showcase will display the efforts of this year’s six sustainability interns and the campus organizations that supported them. The interns represent a revamped internship program for UK’s Office of Sustainability, achieved in partnership with the Tracy Farmer Institute for Sustainability and the Environment as well as the UK Student Sustainability Council.

The entire campus is invited to see the interns’ work. The event will be hosted by the UK Food Connection, with UK Dining providing refreshments.

On Friday, Earth Day 2016, members of the UK community plan to participate in Main Street Clean Sweep to help keep downtown Lexington clean and green. In its third year, Main Street Clean Sweep is a one-day, community-led litter clean up in 20 participating cities and towns throughout Central Kentucky.

Volunteers are needed to help clear Lexington streets, sidewalks and parks of litter and debris anytime from noon–4 p.m. Main Street Clean Sweep in Lexington is a partnership between Bluegrass Greensource and the Downtown Lexington Corporation Foundation (DLCF).

Bluegrass Greensource will provide bags, gloves, litter grabbers and event T-shirts to participants. Supplies, refreshments and giveaways will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at three convenient kick-off locations: Fifth Third Bank Pavilion at Cheapside Park, Thoroughbred Park, and the UK campus. Individuals, families, clubs and organizations are encouraged to volunteer.

The Downtown Lexington Corporation is offering benefits to organizations and businesses who get involved:

· Commit to cleaning your storefront and sidewalk on April 22. Three businesses with the most notable improvements will receive recognition and a prize.

· The organization with the most volunteer participation will receive an office breakfast courtesy of DLCF.

· Every organization to register at least 10 volunteers will receive name recognition on the program at Mayfest Arts Fair on May 7-8.

The downtown event will be held rain or shine. All litter and debris collected during Main Street Clean Sweep will be properly disposed of by the Division of Waste Management.

Main Street Clean Sweep is sponsored by the DLC Foundation and Bluegrass Greensource and held in conjunction with Keep Lexington Beautiful, which is coordinated locally by the city of Lexington. Event sponsors for Main Street Clean Sweep are PNC Bank, Republic Services and Stites & Harbison; additional support provided by LEX18, G&J Pepsi-Cola, WUKY, UK Student Sustainability Council and NewsTalk590.
