UK Global Health Alliance Hosts Silent Art Auction

LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 22, 2016) — The University of Kentucky Global Health Alliance hosts the 12th annual Silent Art Auction from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., March 25, in the atrium of the Biomedical Biological Sciences Research Building. The event is free and open to all students, faculty, staff and the community.

Featured works include art pieces, jewelry and crafts by both local and international artists. Donated art pieces are welcome prior to the auction.

The auction benefits Shoulder to Shoulder Global (STSG), a UK organization that incorporates other academic and community partners and seeks to improve the health and well-being of impoverished and underserved communities worldwide.

“The clinic supported by Shoulder to Shoulder Global, the Centro de Salud Hombro a Hombro in Santo Domingo, Ecuador, provides primary health care services to surrounding impoverished communities,” said Craig Borie, program coordinator for Shoulder to Shoulder Global. “The art auction proceeds help to alleviate the cost of medicines and clinic operations while providing access to quality health care for the underserved populations".

STSG has an integrated approach to health, education, environment and economic development by engaging community partners and university students, staff and faculty in education, research and service.

UK’s Shoulder to Shoulder clinic opened in 2007. The clinic helps to provide medical care, preventive services, oral health and school-based services in the community. It employs local staff, including a medical practitioner, a nurse, a dentist, a social worker and various support personnel. The clinic is open year round, and each year approximately 150 UK students, faculty and professionals participate in health brigades in the region to serve the underserved.
