UK Wind Symphony to Preview National Convention Concert

Published: Feb 15, 2013

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 15, 2013) — The University of Kentucky Wind Symphony, under the direction of John Cody Birdwell, has been selected as one of nine university concert bands from throughout the United States to perform at the 2013 National Conference for the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) this March. The ensemble will preview their national program for Bluegrass audiences as part of a weekend of events celebrating some of the nation's best high school wind musicians beginning at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Singletary Center for the Arts Concert Hall. The following afternoon, the UK High School Honors Wind Ensemble will perform at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, in the same venue.

On Saturday evening, the UK Wind Symphony will perform a preview of the program to be presented at CBDNA's national convention to be held March 22, at University of North Carolina – Greensboro.  Included in concert's program will be Gustav Holst's masterpiece for concert band – "Hammersmith." The music of two Pulitzer Prize-winning composers, Kevin Puts and William Bolcom, will also be performed. "Millennium Canons," by Puts, originally premiered by the Boston Pops, will open the concert. To conclude the concert, the UK Wind Symphony will perform the Kentucky premiere of Bolcom's First Symphony for Band. The Bolcom Symphony, though only four years old, is already considered to be one of the great masterpieces of the band repertoire.

In attendance for the UK Wind Symphony concert will be many of the finest high school musicians from Kentucky and the surrounding region who are participating in the annual UK High School Honors Wind Ensemble during the weekend.  Guest clinician for the Honors Wind Ensemble is Tim Salzman, director of bands from the University of Washington. The High School Honors Wind Ensemble concert will begin at 2 p.m., in the Singletary Center Concert Hall.

The UK Wind Symphony is made up of the finest wind and percussion performers in the School of Music at the UK College of Fine Arts. As the centerpiece of a band program that has served the Commonwealth of Kentucky for more than 100 years, the UK Wind Symphony is considered to be one of the finest university concert bands in the United States. In the summer of 2008, the ensemble participated in a 10-day concert tour of the People's Republic of China and performed for thousands of Chinese citizens in the cities of Suzhou, Yangzhou, Changzhou, and Beijing in celebration of China's hosting of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. The UK Wind Symphony performs frequently on campus in the Singletary Center for the Performing Arts. Concerts are free and open to the public.
