Lance Broeking Named Director of Parking and Transportation Services

LEXINGTON, Ky.  (July 26, 2011) — University of Kentucky Assistant Vice President for Campus Services Anthany Beatty today announced the selection of Lance Broeking as director of Parking and Transportation Services (PTS). He becomes only the second director in the department’s history.

Broeking replaces Don Thornton, who retired from PTS in June after 26 years at the helm. PTS was established as a department in 1985.

Having worked at the university in various capacities since 1996, Broeking is familiar with the inner workings of both campus and PTS; his time at UK includes a four-year stint as PTS associate director for transportation services.

“UK Parking and Transportation Services has established themselves as an industry leader with their recognition as the 2010 International Parking Institute’s Parking Organization of the Year,” said Beatty. “Lance has been a respected voice and advocate for parking and transportation initiatives for nearly 12 years. Under his leadership, I expect the department to not only build upon the successes of the past, but to improve upon them for the future.”

He most recently held a joint assignment as facilities services facilitator and campus services administrator. In this dual role, Broeking was responsible for overseeing business and administration of PTS, UK Police, Environmental Health and Safety and Emergency Management, while managing Real Estate Services.

“I am excited about returning to my campus roots to serve as the director of Parking and Transportation Services,” Broeking said. “Leading PTS provides a tremendous opportunity and challenge. Unlike any other campus division, PTS impacts each member of the university community on a daily basis and gives us a chance to positively impact the lives of our community and the operations of our campus.”

Frank Butler, executive vice president for Finance and Administration, voiced his support for the decision. “After having worked with Lance over the decade, I am confident that he exemplifies the right balance of character, skills and experience necessary to lead the department.”

Broeking holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the United States Military Academy at West Point and a master of business administration from the University of Kentucky. Immediately prior to his time at UK, Broeking spent eight years on active duty in the United States Army. He currently sits on the Town and Gown Commission, the University Neighborhood Advisory Council and on the Lexington and Fayette County Parking Authority Advisory Committee. Since 2006, Broeking has also served the university by instructing first-year students enrolled in his UK101 section.
