LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 8, 2011)  The University of Kentucky community is invited to view a 300-million-year-old fossil shark recently discovered by Webster County Coal miner Jay Wright. It will be on display today in the lobby of the Mining and Mineral Resources Building at 504 Rose St.

The fossil, known to paleontologists as Edestus, is being studied by the Kentucky Geological Survey and the UK Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences.

Department professor Frank Ettensohn said that while plenty of examples of Edestus have been found in western Kentucky, this is the largest specimin he has seen. The fossil will be on display for the UK community and the public Friday, April 8.
