'Out in the Open Conference' Slated July 13

LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 26, 2018) The University of Kentucky third annual “Out in the Open Conference: LGBTQIA Issues for Behavioral Health and Other Helping Professionals” is scheduled July 13. Registration cutoff date is July 11.

A collaboration between the UK College of Social Work and the UK Office of LGBTQ* Resources, the conference will include a variety of workshops providing knowledge and awareness to behavioral health and other helping professionals. In addition, a panel discussion will serve as a platform for bringing together diverse voices within the LGBTQIA and ally communities.

A roster of experienced speakers and panelists will encourage open conversations at the basic, intermediate, advanced and clinical levels. Although geared toward behavioral health and other helping professionals, all registered individuals seeking additional knowledge regarding LGBTQIA issues are welcome. 

Topics will include inclusive public health, LGBTQ* youth, specialized health care, legal landscapes, rural trans-experiences, and mental health. The 2018 Out in the Open Conference schedule includes:

8:30-9 a.m. -- Registration

9-10 a.m. -- "Rural Trans Experience" with Megan Buell

10:10-11:40 a.m. -- "Inclusive Public Health" with Kristen Mark; or "Talking about Youth LGBTQ Issues" with Julie Butcher

11:50 a.m.-1:50 p.m. -- "Mental Health" with Di Sobel; lunch during session

2-3:30 p.m. -- "Legal Landscape" with Chris Hartman; or "Specialized Health Care" with Megan Walden

3:40-5:10 p.m. -- Panel Discussion on LGBTQ* Health; moderated by Lance Poston with Chris Hartman, Megan Buell and Di Sobel

The "Out in the Open Conference" is slated 9 a.m.–5:30 p.m. Friday, July 13. Registration is set for 8:30 a.m., at Indiana Wesleyan University, located at 2530 Sir Barton Way, Suite 200, in Lexington.
