A&S Inducts Four Into Hall of Fame

of

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 22, 2010) - Four individuals will join the University of Kentucky College of Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame during a ceremony this evening at the Keene Barn and Entertainment Center.

 
The school's Hall of Fame recognizes outstanding alumni, faculty and students whose foundation for success can be found in the Arts and Sciences.

 
"We are tremendously pleased about inducting these outstanding Arts and Sciences graduates and faculty into our Hall of Fame," said Mark Lawrence Kornbluh, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. "As our students prepare for their own journeys, the achievements of our award-winning alumni and faculty serve as an inspiration, bringing honor to the entire university and improving the quality of life for the Commonwealth and beyond."

This year's alumni inductees include:

Dr. John D. Baxter- Originally from Lexington, Baxter graduated from UK and Yale Medical School before becoming chief of Endocrinology and director of the Metabolic Research Unit at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He received the Outstanding Investigator Award from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, was elected to the National Academy of Sciences and its Institute of Medicine and also received the highest honors from the Endocrine Society and the American Thyroid Association.

Baxter was a pioneer in the fields of genetic engineering and hormone action, and has authored or co-authored more than 150 scientific publications. He was founder and/or director for multiple biotechnology companies, and brought in more than $360 million in royalties to UCSF. He is currently head of Endocrinology and co-director of the Center for Diabetes Research at the Methodist Hospital and its Research Institute.

Dr. Presley O. Reed - Reed graduated from UK in 1969 with a degree in Medical Arts and earned his board certification in psychiatry and neurology in 1978. In his career as a psychiatrist, Reed operated multiple private practices in Colorado and served as a founding chairman of the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners. Reed has also been active in the business world, establishing himself as an expert in disability management through his role as co-founder and chairman of Reliable Review Services. In addition to his other business ventures, Reed maintains his roots in medicine as chairman of the Reed Group, a privately-held health services company.

 

This year's faculty inductees include:

Joan C. Callahan, Professor of Philosophy and Gender and Women’s Studies - Callahan earned her doctorate in 1982 and joined UK’s Department of Philosophy in 1986. She served as director of the Gender and Women’s Studies Program for nine years and was instrumental in its transition to departmental status in 2009. She is a founding member of the Association for Feminist Ethics and Social Theory and a former editor of the American Philosophical Association (APA) Newsletter on Feminism and Philosophy.

A prolific theorist and writer, Callahan has served as chair of the APA Committee on Inclusiveness in the Profession and continues to serve on several journal editorial boards. Callahan was honored as a Distinguished Woman Philosopher in 2007 by the U.S. Society for Women in Philosophy, and was UK’s faculty recipient of the President’s Award for Diversity in 2008.

William D. Ehmann, Professor Emeritus of Chemistry - Ehmann was honored as an A&S Distinguished Professor in 1968, and in 1978 became one of the first faculty members elected as a University Research Professor. He earned his doctorate in radiochemistry in 1957 and has over four decades of experience teaching at the university level, also serving as chairman of the Chemistry Department and associate dean for research in the Graduate School during his time at UK. In 1996 Ehmann was awarded the American Chemical Society National Award for Nuclear Chemistry and became the first-ever recipient of the American Nuclear Society Award for Radioanalytical Chemistry. Ehmann has been an active member of the scientific community throughout his career, presenting at more than100 conferences and publishing over 275 papers in refereed journals

The Hall of Fame Ceremony will also recognize this year's A&S scholarship recipients.

The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest college at UK with 17 discipline-based departments and 14 interdisciplinary programs. Nearly every student who attends the university takes one or more undergraduate classes in the college during their academic career.
