UK Names Supervisors of the Year

of

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 1, 2013) — More than 30 University of Kentucky supervisors were nominated by their staff and colleagues for the Office of Work-Life’s 2013 Supervisor of the Year Awards.

This year, the prestigious honor was given to Paula Bargo, Medical Staff Affairs manager, and Luke Moe, assistant professor in Plant and Soil Sciences. Finalists for this award were Maryellen Garrison, Henry County Extension Agent, and Tracy Steele, Rehabilitation Services supervisor.

Paula Bargo has worked for UK for 22 years.  As manager of the Medical Staff Office’s five employees, she and her team perform  the mission-critical function of appointing (credentialing and privileging) new physicians and other providers, as well as evaluating the clinical performance of established providers. Consistently, UK MSO performs in the upper 5 percent  by industry benchmarks.  Bargo takes great strides to ensure an effective work-life environment for her employees by promoting a team approach to getting the job done right and in a timely manner. Her nominees felt that their team’s high performance is the direct result of her high-performing supervision.

Luke Moe was appointed as an assistant professor in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences during fall 2009. Since then, he has developed a unique research program and an interdisciplinary laboratory to address local agricultural issues about tobacco farming in Kentucky, as well as global concerns such as climate change and problems arising due to the appearance of alternative fuel sources. Moe’s nominees said that they appreciate his emphasis on fostering a positive and welcoming environment, where everyone feels supported and encouraged in their work. The atmosphere of camaraderie and support Moe created has led to increased productivity and has motivated his team to do their best.

The Office of Work-Life’s Supervisor of the Year Awards are given each year to supervisors who are highly regarded by his or her employees for creating a work environment that enables his/her team’s success and encourages work-life effectiveness for all employees.
