42 Inducted to Phi Beta Kappa

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 3, 2018) The University of Kentucky chapter of Phi Beta Kappa recently inducted 42 students into the nation's oldest and most widely recognized academic honor society.

Phi Beta Kappa elects more than 15,000 new members a year from 270 chapters across the United States. There are also more than 50 associations that foster friendship and learning in members' communities and provide a means for members to continue active affiliation with the society after graduation. The society celebrates excellence in the liberal arts and sciences.

"Once again, the Alpha Chapter inducted some of its ‘best and brightest’ into Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest and most revered of academic honoraries,” said chapter president Ernie Yanarella, UK professor of political science. “The 42 students admitted into this prestigious fraternity joined six U.S. presidents and first lady Eleanor Roosevelt and many other leaders of this nation, including Ruth Bader Ginsburg, W.E.B. DuBois, and Jonas Salk, representing a rainbow of colors, religious affiliations and professions."

UK's Phi Beta Kappa chapter is supported by the Chellgren Center for Undergraduate Excellence, which is part of Academic Enrichment within the Division of Student and Academic Life at UK.

Phil Harling gave the talk this year titled “Broader Is Better.” Phil Harling is a John R. Gaines Professor of the Humanities and director of the Gaines Center for the Humanities.
