LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 24, 2011) - See how Facebook got started at Cheap Seats: "The Social Network" on Tues., Jan. 25, and Wed, Jan. 26, at 8 p.m. in Worsham Theater. Admission is $1. This event is sponsored by the Student Activities Board (SAB).
“The Social Network” begins in 2003, when Harvard undergrad Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) sits down at his computer and creates the foundations for a college social networking site. Hours of blogging and programming later, the project that started in his dorm room soon became an international phenomenon that revolutionized communication.
With the hype around the website, Zuckerberg faced legal complications between his friends and other students about whose idea Facebook really was. Now, 500 million friends later, Zuckerberg is the youngest billionaire in history, but that success didn’t come without its obstacles.
“We look at all the movies that are going to be released and only select the best ones to show at Cheap Seats,” said Brad Elliott, SAB director of cinema. “'The Social Network' recently won Best Movie of the Year at the Golden Globes and is a movie about our generation; I think a lot of students will be excited to see this film again or for the first time.”
Cheap Seats is SAB’s homegrown series that allows students to see blockbusters for $1 before they come out on DVD.
The Student Activities Board (SAB) brings more than 100 events to the University of Kentucky annually that enhance the college experience by providing students, other members of the campus and the Lexington community with entertaining, educational or enriching programs that are reflective of contemporary issues and trends.
