Shoes Are Good For the Sole

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 19, 2010) - A little art is good for the sole. Join the TOMS Shoes Campus Club on Friday, Nov. 19 from 5 pm to 8pm in the Cat’s Den for a Style Your Sole Party.

TOMS (short for tomorrow’s) Shoes is a shoe company based in California. For every pair of shoes that you buy, a brand new pair of shoes goes to a child in need, One for One. The company started in 2006 when founder, Blake Mycoskie, befriended children in Argentina. When he noticed they didn’t have shoes, he wanted to change that. As of September 2010, TOMS has given away one million pairs of shoes.

The TOMS Shoes Campus Club at UK is made up of students who are passionate about spreading the word about TOMS and planning fun events to educate students. The goal is to inform students about the One for One business model and how they can not only be social activists now, but also learn how to incorporate giving into what they do in the future. The club became an official organization at the University of Kentucky in April 2010.

The Style Your Sole Party is a free event that both students and public are welcome to attend. Attendees may bring their own TOMS to decorate or just come and enjoy the event. There will a free screening of the TOMS documentary, free food, free art supplies available and a free t-shirt given to 30 attendees. There will also be free play for all Cat’s Den activities. Funding allocated to the club was used to give 25 students the opportunity to buy TOMS at half-price and have to decorate at the event.

Sabrina Hounshell, president of the TOMS Shoes Campus Club said, “TOMS is an incredible company that is turning students and consumers into global social activists. I hope that students who both own TOMS already or who have heard of TOMS and want to know more will come out to the event.”

This event is free and sponsored by the TOMS Shoes Campus Club, Student Government, the Student Sustainability Council, the Center for Community Outreach and the African Student Association.
