LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 30, 2011) – Crayons aren’t just for little kids anymore. Nashville artist Herb Williams creates lifelike sculptures out of crayons, and an exhibit of his work is on display in the Rasdall Gallery in the Student Center through Wednesday, Sept. 21. The exhibit is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. This event is free and sponsored by the Student Activities Board.

Williams was born in Montgomery, Ala., in 1973. From a young age he worked in construction, which gave him an understanding and interest in structure and materials. Williams creates original sculptures out of individual crayons that may require as many as hundreds of thousands. Williams’ work has attracted attention from China, England, Germany, Canada, Australia and Japan and his work has been featured at an Inaugural art exhibit in Washington, D.C.

“I have never seen anything like the sculptures and art that Herb Williams produces,” said Shannon Ruhl, director of SAB Cultural Arts Committee. “Crayons bring back so many great memories of childhood and his sculptures are amazing.”

Williams is just one of many exhibits that will be featured in the Rasdall Gallery this fall. Other exhibits include:

  • Letitia Quesenberry, Louisville fine artist (paintings and drawings), Sept. 26-Oct. 19
  • Mark O'Bryan exhibit, Oct. 24-Nov. 9
  • AIDS Quilt, Nov. 14-Dec. 9

The Rasdall Gallery is located in the Student Center, off of the Great Hall, and is open from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Student Activities Board brings more than 100 events to the University of Kentucky annually that enhance the college experience by providing students, other members of the campus and the Lexington community with entertaining, educational or enriching programs that are reflective of contemporary issues and trends.
