From Soldier to Student
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 15, 2012) — It is no surprise you may share classes with nontraditional students here at UK, but what does come as a surprise is that some of these nontraditional students are war veterans. Hear their stories at From Soldier to Student at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, in Worsham Theater, located in the Student Center. This event is free and sponsored by the Student Activities Board.
In fact, in 2011, the University of Kentucky was recognized as one of the top 10 "Best for Vets" colleges by Military Times' Edge magazine. UK was ranked No. 7 nationwide in a survey that places emphasis on academic accreditation, central veterans' offices and staff knowledgeable on veterans' issues. UK veterans are served by the Veterans Resource Center on campus.
The From Soldier to Student event will bring light to the challenges of veterans coming back home while also going through the hoops of college. The film “Brothers at War”, which tells the story of a family dealing with the transition of their vet coming back home will be screened at the event. Following the film, Robert Mock, UK's vice president of Student Affairs, and Josh Hoke, president of the UK Military Veterans of America student organization, will share a few words about their experiences as war veterans.
“I think other UK students need to become aware of the challenges our fellow Wildcats and peers face when they come back from serving," Reyno Tapia, director of SAB in the Halls Committee, said. "It’s eye opening."
The Student Activities Board brings more than 100 entertaining, educational and enriching programs that are reflective of contemporary issues and trends to the University of Kentucky annually. These programs are designed to enhance the college experience for students, faculty, staff and the greater Lexington community.
