Student E-mail Is Moving to the "Cloud"

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 13, 2011) - University of Kentucky Information Technology has announced that UK student e-mail will be transitioned from the current Exchange host to a "cloud-based" service beginning in January 2011. Students will have the option to choose either a Google Gmail or a Microsoft Live account, but their Universal Email Address "John.L.Doe@uky.edu" will remain the same. This change will offer additional e-mail storage space and features when compared to those of Exchange.

An individual e-mail containing the specifics of the migration process will be sent to each student between January 2011 and April 2011. After the transition, students will continue to use their link blue account for myUK and other campus services, but e-mail will become completely separate.

An FAQ document regarding this transition and additional e-mail migration information is available at www.uky.edu/email.  For other questions or concerns, please contact the UK Information Technology Customer Service Center at 859-218-HELP (4357) or via e-mail at helpdesk@uky.edu.

Note: Students in the colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Health Sciences, Nursing, and Public Health will continue to receive and use Exchange email due to health information privacy regulation, but will be eligible to use Google or Microsoft cloud email for personal use. UK student employees will also receive and use Exchange email for job purposes, although other mail will move to "the cloud."
