Freedom Rider Comes to Lexington
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 8, 2012) — Hear a firsthand account from a member of the Freedom Riders, a courageous group of civil rights activists that traveled to segregated cities across the South in the 1960s to promote integration. Reverend Alphonso Petway will speak about his experiences as a Freedom Rider. There will be a brief question and answer session following Petway’s speech. This event will allow students to get a firsthand account of what African Americans encountered on a daily basis; what we, as a nation, have overcome; and how much further we have to go.
“I’m particularly excited to bring Reverend Petway to speak to students about this topic,” said RaeVonna Mitchell, director of Multicultural Affairs. “I feel it’s an old conversation with a different twist.”
The Student Activities Board brings more than 100 entertaining, educational and enriching programs that are reflective of contemporary issues and trends to the University of Kentucky annually. These programs are designed to enhance the college experience for students, faculty, staff and the greater Lexington community.
