Make your move-out count: Recycle and donate during finals week

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 28, 2025) — As students pack up and head out for the summer, don’t toss it — recycle or donate it. During finals week, Wednesday, May 7, through Friday, May 9, University of Kentucky Recycling staff will be stationed near the outdoor compactors at each residence hall to help with move-out waste and recycling.
In addition to the Give and Go donation program in the lobby of each residence hall, two new recycling options will be available this year. During move-out, UK will be collecting foam mattress toppers and metal items such as broken chairs or shelves.
What can be donated or recycled at move-out:
- Cardboard, paper and plastics (in the recycling compactors)
- Mattress toppers and metal items (at special collection points near each residence hall’s outdoor compactors)
- Clothing, household items and nonperishable food (in donation bins inside residence hall lobbies and at special collection points outside residence halls)
Help reduce waste during move-out and support UK’s goal of becoming a zero-waste campus by 2030.

As the state’s flagship, land-grant institution, the University of Kentucky exists to advance the Commonwealth. We do that by preparing the next generation of leaders — placing students at the heart of everything we do — and transforming the lives of Kentuckians through education, research and creative work, service and health care. We pride ourselves on being a catalyst for breakthroughs and a force for healing, a place where ingenuity unfolds. It's all made possible by our people — visionaries, disruptors and pioneers — who make up 200 academic programs, a $476.5 million research and development enterprise and a world-class medical center, all on one campus.
