Film Series Offers Much to Campus

LEXINGTON, KY. (Sept. 19, 2014) – The University of Kentucky’s varied film series screenings this week range from animated fantasy to deadly dramas.

The International Film Series, sponsored in part by the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Hispanic Studies, will screen "Los Olvidados" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, followed by the Late Night Film Series' much-anticipated screening of "Monsters University" at 10 p.m.

The Late Night Film Series completes the week with "James and the Giant Peach" at 7 p.m. and "Where the Wild Things Are" at 10 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20. All films are free and located in Worsham Theater of the Student Center.

A group of hooligans find themselves in the center of a dangerous slum right in the middle of a crime-infested Mexico City in "Los Olividadis."  Initially wholesome, the morals of one of the boys are gradually corrupted as he grows to become more like those who surround him. (80 minutes, not rated).

Mike and Sully may be a dynamic and highly effective team in the corporate world, but "Monsters University" finds their days at college to be an entirely different relationship.  Feeling an intense dislike for each other, the pair must find a way to overcome their differences if they ever hope to work together in the days to come. (104 minutes, rated G).

Following the death of his parents and the end of his idyllic life on the English seaside, "James and the Giant Peach" tells of a boy making a last-ditch effort to escape the clutches of his two evil aunts.  When a mysterious man sets off a chain of bizarre events, the boy ventures inside a giant peach, inhabited by a group of insects willing to help. (79 minutes, rated PG).

In "Where the Wild Things Are," a temperamental boy runs away from home after an incident with his sister and soon finds himself in a land created by his own vivid imagination.  Inhabited by giant monsters that would normally eat such a visitor, they crown him their king once he promises to solve all of their problems. (101 minutes, rated PG).

Worsham Theater is located on the first floor of the University of Kentucky Student Center Addition, and Center Theater is located on the second floor of the main Student Center. All Late Night Film Series screenings are free to students, staff, faculty and guests. For more information, contact scfilmseries@gmail.com.
