Funding Education Abroad Workshop Helps Students with Money Matters

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 17, 2016) ― UK Education Abroad (UK EA) will host its bi-annual Funding Education Abroad Workshop 12 p.m.-3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26 at The Hub, W.T. Young Library. Students will be able to learn the ins and outs of budgeting for experiences abroad, how to find and apply for different types of education abroad scholarships and how to make a rock star application that will catch reviewers’ eyes.

In order to provide summer education abroad students with enough time to make final decisions on their commitment to go abroad this summer, UK EA’s scholarship deadline moved from March to February 1st. Therefore it’s important that students get started on their research for scholarships soon.

“It takes some time to organize your thoughts, write a scholarship essay and have it reviewed by a few people,” said Miko McFarland, acting director of Education Abroad & Exchanges. “Students who get a jumpstart on the research and writing can have their essays reviewed by Education Abroad and Writing Center advisors at the workshop. Through the sessions, they can learn tips and tricks for successful essay writing, and talk with advisors who can help them craft their unique stories in a way that is concise, compelling and effective.”

The Writing Center, also located in The Hub, will be available to review pre-written essays during the event in their office. Additionally, students with questions about academic scholarships and financial aid will also be able to talk to representatives from each office during the event.

“In order to receive a scholarship, we often say ‘you have to play to win,’” McFarland said. “Students who put in the time to do their research, write thoughtfully and utilize campus resources are increasing their chances to fund their education abroad experience. Scholarship opportunities are competitive, but enhancing your writing skills through the tools offered at this workshop is a positive outcome nonetheless.”

Deadline for the UK Education Abroad Scholarship is February 1. Additional scholarships available to students through external, non-UK resources include:

In addition to the Funding Education Abroad workshop, peer advisers and staff, UK EA has several resources such as a listing of EA scholarships and creative fundraising ideas that can be found online.
