Rival Schools Come Together to Raise Money ‘For The Kids’

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 1, 2021)  The rivalry between the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville has been a staple of the athletics culture in Kentucky since its beginning. The two schools love to hate one another to the point that some fans won’t even wear the colors of the rival school.

However, there is one thing that both schools have in common: their dedication to bettering the state of Kentucky. That is what the Commonwealth Cup is all about.

Scheduled for Feb. 8-11, the Commonwealth Cup brings the dance marathons of both schools, the University of Kentucky’s DanceBlue and the University of Louisville’s raiseRED, together in an attempt to fundraise $50,000 collectively for the respective hospitals the dance marathons benefit. For DanceBlue, money raised will benefit the DanceBlue Kentucky Children’s Hospital Hematology/Oncology Clinic. For raiseRED, money raised will benefit the Norton Children’s Cancer Institute and the UofL Department of Pediatric Oncology and Hematology.

The fundraiser will be held via both of the dance marathons’ social media. There will be posts daily that highlight the fundraiser itself, the impact of each organization, and how much money has been raised collectively. Templates for students to use fundraising will also be posted.

In addition to the daily posts, there will also be two events held Wednesday, Feb. 10. These events include a TikTok competition all day, in which the dance marathon with the most engagement on their TikTok posted that day wins, and a virtual bingo event at 7 p.m., in which everyone is welcome to attend and have the opportunity to win some prizes from either DanceBlue or raiseRED.

DanceBlue and raiseRed sincerely hope that you will consider joining them in this goal of raising $50,000 collectively “For The Kids” and for Kentucky. If you would like to join the fundraising effort, you can donate to DanceBlue here and raiseRED here.

If you are not able to donate at this time, you are invited to follow DanceBlue (Instagram - @uk_danceblue, Facebook - DanceBlue, Twitter/TikTok - @ukdanceblue) and raiseRED (Instagram/Twitter - @raisered_uofl, Facebook - RaiseRED, TikTok - @raisered) on social media and participate in all of the events of the week.

As the state’s flagship, land-grant institution, the University of Kentucky exists to advance the Commonwealth. We do that by preparing the next generation of leaders — placing students at the heart of everything we do — and transforming the lives of Kentuckians through education, research and creative work, service and health care. We pride ourselves on being a catalyst for breakthroughs and a force for healing, a place where ingenuity unfolds. It's all made possible by our people — visionaries, disruptors and pioneers — who make up 200 academic programs, a $476.5 million research and development enterprise and a world-class medical center, all on one campus.

In 2022, UK was ranked by Forbes as one of the “Best Employers for New Grads” and named a “Diversity Champion” by INSIGHT into Diversity, a testament to our commitment to advance Kentucky and create a community of belonging for everyone. While our mission looks different in many ways than it did in 1865, the vision of service to our Commonwealth and the world remains the same. We are the University for Kentucky.
