WUKY and NPR Present Event About Personal Finance Oct. 16 on UK Campus

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 13, 2014) — Whether facing first-time loans as a college student a new mortgage as a third-time home buyer, or a long-awaited retirement, they all come with risks, opportunities and of course, questions. To help members of the Lexington community navigate these complex decisions, WUKY joins NPR to bring Family Matters: Your Financial Lifetime to the University of Kentucky for a conversation about money at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Singletary Center for the Arts.  Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Guided by NPR "Morning Edition" host David Greene and "Planet Money" correspondent Robert Smith, Family Matters: Your Financial Lifetime brings together financial experts with regular people for conversations about their experiences with money, from the accumulation of debt to the accumulation of wealth, and to share insight on preparing for college, home ownership and retirement. Tickets for the free event are available now on the NPR website.

In Lexington, Greene and Smith will be joined on stage by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance editor Janet Bodnar, financial advisor and author Louis Barajas and Pew Charitable Trusts senior associate Sarah Sattelmeyer to explore the responsibilities of home ownership, the full expense of a college education and generationally unique definitions of retirement. Family Matters gets at the heart of questions many people ask about personal finance and leaves the audience equipped with a clearer understanding of their own financial situation and options for future planning. The public can follow and participate in these conversations at #NPRPresents.

Greene’s and Smith’s reporting has taken them to the living rooms, banks and offices where people are making big decisions about money, and provides them unique perspectives on the specific pressures families face today. In the 2012 "Morning Edition" series "Family Matters: The Money Squeeze," Greene joined three families to explore the challenging financial realities of what some economists call the "sandwich generation” – those who are now balancing costs surrounding elder care, college-bound kids and post-employment retirement plans. A member of NPR’s "Planet Money" team, Smith regularly reports on how the global economy is affecting people’s lives and breaks down critical and complex economic news in a funny, engaging and digestible way.
