Fire in Whitney-Hendrickson Building Impacts Clinic Schedules; Markey Remains Open

Markey

LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 19, 2021) – A small fire broke out at around 3 a.m., Wednesday, May 19, in the Comprehensive Breast Care Center (CBCC) located on the second floor of the Whitney-Hendrickson Building. This building is part of the UK Markey Cancer Center and faces Huguelet Drive.

As designed, heat from the fire activated sprinklers, which produced water to fight the fire. There is now water damage to parts of the first and second floors, in addition to the fire damage to the CBCC.

The CBCC and Markey Cancer Center remain open and are adjusting schedules.

Schedulers are contacting patients with appointments today to reschedule or redirect them:

  • Mammography imaging and clinic procedures there are being rescheduled.
  • Comprehensive Breast Care Clinic appointments have been moved to the new Hematology-Oncology clinic in the Ben Roach Building today. The site of future appointments is to be determined.
  • Chemotherapy infusion, GYN Oncology and all integrative health appointments remain on schedule.
  • Multi-Disciplinary Clinic appointments have been moved to the Head, Neck and Respiratory Clinic on the second of the Ben Roach Building today. The site of future appointments to be determined.

Patients with questions regarding their appointments can call 859-257-4488 today. The Markey Cancer Center Whitney-Hendrickson Café is closed until further notice. Access to the building is limited to support the clean-up efforts that are currently underway.
